I get swollen ankles when I fly. I am 55 and slightly over-weight. What can I do to prevent this? Is this serious?
Pedal edema or swollen ankle are a common occurrence in long distance flights. As you sit idle over a few hours time due to gravity, interstitial fluid accumulates in your ankles.
To prevent this from happening please get up and walk in the aisle for 5 min every 2 hours or do static calf pumps. Some people also may benefit from using anti gravity stockings which are available over the counter at major chemists.
If that does not help please seek medical opinion from a specialist.
